Just got a new motorcycle and ready to cruise the Ohio backroads? Here are a few tips to help keep you safe along the way.
Get a helmet. Get a helmet. Get a helmet.
In Ohio, motorcyclists under the age of 18 or those holding a “novice” license are by law required to wear a helmet. Regardless if you’re a novice or not, a helmet is always a good idea. A motorcycle rider not wearing a helmet is 40 percent more likely to experience a fatal head injury in a crash than a rider with a helmet. A full-face helmet with protective eye gear is a great helmet choice, especially if it’s been approved by the Department of Transportation.

If the weather’s chancy, don’t take risks.
Precipitation can greatly affect riding. Rain can challenge your vision, and can also affect your tires’ ability to grip the road. If you are forced to ride in the rain, be cautious and do not make any sudden moves. Go easy on the brakes so as not to slide. And remember, roads are most slippery when it first begins to rain, as oil from the roads mixes with the rainwater.
Your best offense is a good defense
Due to technology–and other factors–many drivers behind the wheels of passenger vehicles are distracted drivers. This makes it more important than ever that motorcyclists drive defensively. Never tailgate a vehicle. Give plenty of space between your bike and any other vehicles on the road. Make sure that other drivers can see you at all times. And above all, be alert and present while riding. If you’re tired and/or have been drinking, never get on a motorcycle.
